TAKE CARE OF YOUR JEW’S HARP
Moisture is a main enemy for all jew’s harps, especially saliva (even stainless alloys deteriorate from prolonged contact with saliva).
Wipe dry your jew’s harp after
playing.
Grease and dirt also adversely affects on metal –
wash your hands before using your jew’s harp.
For polishing it is good to clean the jew’s harp with tooth powder, chalk or Goya polishing paste
(use towel – it is convenient). This is especially helpful if the
jew’s harp got dark.
Protect the tongue
(the most fragile part of the instrument) from damage. We recommend storing the jew’s harp in a wooden case, where there is a slot for the tongue,
in which it is securely fixed.
A minute of history
The jew’s harp is known by many names, such as the jaw harp or mouth harp.
Here in the Altai it is called a “khomus” (komus).
Until 1988 the khomus was very expensive and hard to find, until Vladimir Potkin, a master craftsman, decided this symbolic instrument should be more accessible to the people of the Altai Mountains. He began to produce the khomus in greater quantities so that it was available to anyone who dreamed of learning to play. In 2000 his brother Pavel joined him, helping to improve the instrument’s technology and popularize it all over Russia and beyond. In 2006, Pavel founded his own workshop and created a new khomus, which was larger and had a deeper tone, and, despite its price, is indistinguishable from more expensive instruments. The Potkin brothers quickly became famous as two of the world’s most distinguished khomus craftsmen; more importantly, it is thanks to their hard work that the khomus is now available to anyone who wants to learn to play this mystical instrument.
It is an Altaian folk instrument, not just a souvenir – it’s a real musical instruments with a melodious, rich of overtones sound.
